Studies have shown that there are links between apples and weight loss, brain health (including Alzheimer's disease), certain cancers, heart and lung health, and stroke. Apples are an excellent source of dietary fiber. In addition, apples are also a healthy source of antioxidants, which are related to disease prevention. Recent studies have shown that the nutritional content of apples has many health benefits.
Lung health
Child and adult asthma: A study from the United Kingdom reported that children whose mothers ate apples during pregnancy were much less likely to show symptoms of asthma at the age of 5, including asthma. Among the various foods consumed and recorded by pregnant women, apples are the only food that has been found to have a positive correlation with reducing the risk of asthma. (Thorax, 2007, 62: 745-746). Researchers from Australia reported that study participants had the lowest risk of asthma from eating apples and pears. (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2003,78:414-421). A study by King's College London and the University of Southampton reported that people who eat at least two apples a week have a 22-32% lower risk of asthma than those who eat fewer apples. (Am J Respir Crit Care Med, 2001, 164: 1823-1828)
Chronic cough and lung cancer: A study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reported that foods rich in fiber and flavonoids (found in large amounts in apples) can reduce chronic expectoration and other respiratory symptoms. Researchers at the University of Hawaii and the National Institute of Public Health of Finland also believe that the flavonoids found in apples are related to reducing the risk of certain cancers, including lung cancer. (Nursing Medicine, 2004, 170: 279-287; Journal of National Cancer Institute, 200, 92: 154-160; American Journal of Epidemiology, 1997, 146: 223-230)
Heart health
Reduce mortality: A study found that a common ingredient in apples may be related to the heart health of postmenopausal women. The results of the study indicate that increasing the consumption of apples may help reduce mortality from coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease. (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2007,85(3):895-909)
Fiber and cardiovascular disease: A French study found that the diet with the highest total dietary fiber and insoluble dietary fiber intake was associated with a significant reduction in several heart disease risk factors. These include overweight, elevated waist-to-hip ratio, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Researchers report that the risk of heart disease may be reduced by 14% for every 10 people, and the risk of fiber grams consumed per heart disease may be reduced by 27%. Fiber from fruits seems to be more protective than cereal fiber. Reduce the risk of death from coronary heart disease by 30% (Arch Int Med, 2004, 164: 370-376)
Low-density lipoprotein oxidation: Researchers at the University of California, Davis report that drinking apples and apple juice every day may help reduce the damage caused by "bad" cholesterol and prevent heart disease. This is based on this first human study the result of. (Journal of Chinese Medicine and Food, 2000, 3: 159-165). Earlier, a study by JC-DavisDavis reported similar results in vitro. They also confirmed that important phytonutrients in apples are also present in apple juice. (Life Science, 1999, 64: 1913-1920)
Immunity
A study by the University of Illinois showed that soluble fiber, such as pectin in apples, can reduce obesity-related diseases and inflammation, and strengthen the immune system. When the immune system of experimental animals was challenged, animals fed a low-fat diet with soluble fiber or insoluble fiber showed significantly different responses. Compared with other animals, animals fed with soluble fiber got less sick and recovered faster. (Brain, Behavior and Immunity, 2010)
Gut health
Researchers from the University of Denmark found that apples and apple products can increase the number of beneficial bacteria in the intestines, promote intestinal health and strengthen the immune system. When scientists fed mice with various forms of apples (including apple juice, applesauce, and whole apples), the mice produced a large number of beneficial gut bacteria. Researchers believe that this is due to the pectin contained in apples. Pectin is a fibrous substance found in plant cell walls. It is often packaged and used as a gelling agent to make jams and jellies. Apples are a natural source of this fibrous substance. Friendly bacteria in the intestines like to feed on apple pectin, because apple pectin allows them to replicate and multiply in the intestine, and play a role in fighting diseases.
